'Duckman Barks over Carl Barks'
Translated by Daan Jippes in 1973, published in Stripschrift 59/60, 1973
(page 18). Xeroxes supplied by Harry Fluks on 5 June 1990. My guess
that this interview is from 1968 is because Barks mentions a painting he has
to make of a school, which must be the 1968 painting "Last Days of an Old School".
A greyscale picture can be seen of it in the Carl Barks Library. In his article
Jippes says it's a "American interview", which hopefully means that the original
version has been published there. A small part of the interview (about a studio
made to order and windows with a view) can be found in The Carl Barks Library
(page 4A-184). The photo is taken from the xeroxes, maybe it's a photo from
the American interview? I've corrected some notes by Daan Jippes, though I've not
been looking carefully for mistakes. Maybe more is inaccurate (remember it was
written in 1973, at a time Carl Barks' name wasn't as known as he is now),
which might mean some information is contradicted elsewhere on this webpage.
("Q" stands for "question", "CB" for "Carl Barks".)

Picture taken from panel 9.3 of the swimming pool story (W WDC 129-02),
colour by Daniël van Eijmeren. Information on typed version being
"identical to the draft, or nearly so" is taken from Michael Barrier's
"Carl Barks and the Art of the Comic Book", page 82.
Quotes of draft letter taken from a transcription Thomas Andrae article
"The Expurgated Barks", published in the Carl Barks Library (page 3B-519).
Thomas Andrae explains what was included (or must have been included) in the
final typescript letter. The apparent excluded paragraph is a rewritten version
of an unfinished draft paragraph, which is also transcribed in the article (not
here!). In the draft, Barks wrote "Down with child psychologists!", which he
changed into "Forward to better child psychology!" in the final letter. The
postscriptum is a literary parallel to "Don Quixote". Barks mentions a "first
paragraph", but the article doesn't clearly identify what the first paragraph
is (if included). Another possibility is that I fail to fully understand
Andrae's transcription/description of the draft. (DvE, 4 June 2001.)

1982, May 22 interview by Wim van Helden
Taken from the Dutch Wim van Helden book "Carl Barks en de Mythe van Walt
Disney's Donald Duck" (page 6). The interview took place on
22 May 1982. A few pages, in which Wim van Helden (among other things)
tells how he got to know Barks' work in his youth, are omitted here. As far
as I know there has never been an English version of this interview, at least
not in published form. Hopefully Wim van Helden will make one someday? For
the people filtering out the English quotes: Barks' comment "to hell with Al
Taliaferro's ducks" should be read in context and is not in any way an opinion
on Taliaferro and / or his work.
