Subject: Der Donaldist 108 - review
The 108th issue of German scientific magazine
"Der Donaldist" has been
published recently. Here is a brief synopsis of its contents:
- Front Cover: by Maikel Das, showing Donald Duck looking at a mushroom
cloud (illustrating an article of Torsten Gerber, see below);
- two (!) proceedings of the 22nd congress of D.O.N.A.L.D. (March 27th 99
in Achim, near Bremen), by Nicola Waldbauer and Torsten Gerber, respectively
(five pages each; elsewhere in the magazine, various newspaper articles on
the congress are reprinted);
- a quiz by Gangolf Seitz (postcards containing the correct solution
"176-167" and sent to Gangolf Seitz, Rossweg 15a, 35094 Lahntal, Germany are in
for a raffle for a "valuable donaldistic item");
- "Strahlende Macht. Atomenergie und ihre Nutzung in Entenhausen" by
Torsten Gerber ("Radiant power. Nuclear energy and its practical application in
Duckburg"): The author enlightens the role of atomic energy in the city of
Duckburg, assuming that Duckburg is a continental power (be it independently
or within a federation of states or countries); data are provided that
Duckburg uses atomic energy as method to maintaion its strategic position, in
competition with enemy countries (such as Brutopia). According to Gerber, atomic
energy is also used for peaceful purposes such as space flight; there is a
hole sector of economy based on nuclear power, and there is strong evidence
that atomic energy has become part of daily life to Duckburgians, even in
children's play;
- an obituary on Thomas Wahle, director of the D.O.N.A.L.D.-Museum in
Heiningen, by Andreas Platthaus. Rest in peace, old pal;
- "Das Leben - Ein Kampf. Archetypen im t=E4glichen Gegeneinander" by Klaus
Harms ("Life - a battle. Archetypes in daily one-against-each-other"): Harms
provides data that daily life of
Duckburg citizens is determined by fighting. Various styles of battling
are analyzed. The author claims that fighting methods in duels without weapons
bear strong similarities to fighting styles of animals or zombies. Hence,
fighting might be a relict of animal origin (so-called archetype) in
Duckburgians;
- also by Klaus Harms is an article supporting the theory of natural
superiority of the decimal system based on observations of blue-green algae;
- "William Van Horn" by Peter Kowalewski: The author gives an overview on
the Disney works of Van Horn, distinguishing four periods (Gladstone
1988-90, Disney 90-92, Egmont 92 till today, Gladstone 94/96). Emphasis is taken on
evolution on drawing and narrative style.
The article is accompanied by an index of US-American and German Editions
of Van Horn's stories (including gag pages, but not counting cover
illustrations) up to Micky Maus issue # 28/99;
- "Duckfilm. Disney-Film-Notizen" by Richard Jebe ("Notes on Disney
films"): Disney cartoons and films that have been running on TV lately are listed,
and new German video editions are noted. A closer look is taken at "Mickey
Mouse Works", the new Disney TV series (not yet running on German TV);
- an untitled feature with excerpts of the pinboard of D.O.N.A.L.D. on the
Internet (go to: http://donald.org, then click the SCHWARZES BRETT link),
most probably by Richard Jebe also;
- plus various features, including impressum by Johnny Grote and back
cover by Anonymous.
That's all, folks. Der Donaldist is available at Johnny Grote, Eupener
Strasse 1, 50933 Koeln, Germany, E-Mail: grote@cologneweb.com . Price is DM
8,-- per issue including porto and package. Recent editions are available also.
