Landmark: Barks' first Benny Burro story.
Appearances: Benny Burro
Backstage: Barks discussed his work for Our Gang Comics in the "Comic Art" No. 7, 1968 interview: "The Barney Bear stories were assigned to me for no particular reason that I know of (artists were in short supply, perhaps). I had never heard of Barney Bear or Benny Burro until the office sent me a model sheet of 'Benny, the Lonesome Burro' and asked me to do a finished 8-page story for the MGM Our Gang No. 8. They must have liked the yarn, for they asked me to do another for Our Gang No. 9, and also sent a model sheet of a nameless dog whom I called Happy Hound. I did an 8-pager of him for Our Gang No. 9. Later I saw him in an MGM movie short as Droopy. Then I was asked for another Benny for Our Gang No. 10. Next, I was asked to combine Benny with Barney Bear into an 8-page, 8-panel format as a regular feature, starting in Our Gang No. 11."
Notes:
At least up to 1978, this story hasn't been reprinted in the USA.
In The Netherlands, reprinted in "Tom & Jerry" Nr. 246, 1996.
Dutch translation.
Layout: Doesn't end with a full page.
Landmark: Barks' first Happy Hound (a.k.a. Droopy) story.
Changes: On the last page, several panels were trimmed to make way for a circulation statement. Apparently panel 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 were left unchanged. Panel 8.4 looks shortened in height (about a third) and misses the bottom of the balloon pointer. Panels 8.5 and 8.6 have been cut in their bottom right corners.
Status: Original version is lost.
Appearances: Happy Hound (a.k.a. Droopy). The prisoner is the wolf who was Droopy's opponent in many of Tex Avery's MGM cartoons.
Notes:
Reprinted in "Tom & Jerry and Friends" No. 1, December 1991.
Gap in panel 8.6 has been filled.
In The Netherlands, reprinted in "Tom & Jerry" Nr. 241, 1996.
Dutch translation. Gap in panel 8.6 has been filled.
Questions: "Here we go round the mullberry bush" is a line from a song. (4.3) Do you know the title and the origin of this song?
Notes: Reprinted in "Tom & Jerry 50th Anniversary Special" No. 1, October 1991.
Landmark: Barks' last Benny Burro story without Barney Bear.
Notes: Reprinted in "Tom & Jerry" No. 2, November 1991. Relettered with different dialogue and titled "What a Parrot". As with the similarly retooled Happy Hound story published around this time, the reprint appears to have come from a foreign source. Apparently, this reprint came from a foreign source.
Hooray! I'm cured! My mind doesn't hurt anymore!
-- mad musician
Landmark: First story with Barney and Benny as a team. Barney Bear and Benny Burro never appeared together in animated cartoons until "Half-pint Palomino", a 1953 MGM cartoon directed by Dick Lundy (although Barney did have an unnamed burro as a foil in "The Prospecting Bear", a 1941 cartoon directed by Rudolf Ising).
Appearances: Benny Burro, Barney Bear; Wild West (1.1); Rawhide Cafe (1.6); Ghost Desert (2.3, 3.8); [Dai]ly News (newspaper, 2.3); mad musician (7.5); William Tell Overture (8.4).
Notes: At least up to 1978, this story hasn't been reprinted in the USA.
Landmark: Barks' last Happy Hound (a.k.a. Droopy) story for which he did the art.
Changes: Written and drawn as eight-page story with three-tier pages, but published as six-page story with four-tier pages. It was cut up, panels were trimmed or expanded and the panels were pasted up in eight- or ten-panel (four-tier) pages instead of the original six-panel (three-tier) pages. In some panels, drawings not by Barks were added to fill in the empty space caused by the alterations in his panels. Apparently, no panels were omitted.

Status: Original version is lost.
Appearances: Happy Hound (a.k.a. Droopy).
Notes: Reprinted in "Tom & Jerry and Friends" No. 2, February 1992. Relettered with different dialogue and titled "Hugo Hound" (so that Happy/Droopy is renamed Hugo in the story). As with the similarly retooled Benny Burro story published around this time, the reprint appears to have come from a foreign source.
Redrawn by Daan Jippes as ten-page story with trie-tier pages, starring a character called "Botje Beer" instead of Happy Hound. Apparently, this was done because of copyright reasons. Jippes' version contains the same plot, but the timing and some scenes differ from the original story. The opening caption of the story credits Barks as story writer, and Daan Jippes as the maker of the story. In the Netherlands, Jippes' version has been published in "Mickey Maandblad" 81-08, August 1981.
- Are we still alive?

- I'm SURE we are -- I couldn't hurt this bad if I wasn't!

In The Netherlands, reprinted in "Tom & Jerry" Nr. 238, 1996.
Dutch translation.
Details: When Barney suggests to lure the wolf, Benny replies "We tried the same trick on a wild horse a while back, and you almost got your neck broke." (2.3) Obviously, this is a reference to the Barney Bear and Benny Burro story in the previous issue. OG 13.
