According to a January, 1979 letter to Michael Barrier, Barks believes that
this is an alternate version of
»different interests [pencil drawing]«. That
sketch would have been accepted, while this alternate version was then
returned to him.
Members of the Duck family are sitting together, all reading about an interest
of their own. Daisy is reading a magazine with the heading "beauty" on its
backside. Donald is reading a sports paper. Grandma is reading a book about
cooking. The nephews are reading comics. Scrooge is reading a hundred-dollar
bill. The nephews are the only ones who are sitting on the floor, instead of
a chair. Daisy is the only one who has her feet placed on a pouffe.

Pencil sketch on tissue paper. This illustrations consists of two halves.
The half on the left (showing a jug) appears to be crossed out with
two crossed diagonal lines, but these might be guidelines for the design
of the drawing. The half on the right (showing Scrooge) contains a logo
on top.
Scrooge enthusiastically squeezes a lemon with a gaint pair of pinchers,
aiming the pressed juice into an overflowing giant jug. The overflowing
juice fills at least nine or ten glasses. These glasses are placed like
stairsteps, under the jug. When one glass overflows, it fills up another
glass which is placed slightly lower.
Changes:
Many of the Whitman storybooks were designed to open on a two-page
illustration extending from the front pastedown endpaper onto the title page.
The left half of the drawing was then reproduced in mirror on the rear
pastdown endpaper, facing the last page of the story. Barks intended this
sketch for the opening spread of
The Lemonade King, but the editors cut
the drawing of Scrooge and designed a new title page. Apparently, the full
design does still appear on the rear pastedown endpapers.
(The editors's title page contains a watercolor of Scrooge sitting on a deck
chair, drinking lemonade from four glasses at once, using four straws. One
straw for each glass.)

Questions:
Has this design been used for
The Lemonade King, and has it been
finished as a watercolor by Norman McGary?
