different interests [watercolor]
- Inducks: ...

- Type: watercolor
- Creation date: [1960]
- Art: Norm McGary
- Pencil: Tony Strobl
- Script: [Carl Barks?]
- Hero: [Uncle Donald and His Nephews]
- Submission: 1960, April 25 (pencil drawing); [unknown] (watercolor)
- Publication date: 1960, (November)

- Pages: 1
- Orientation: portrait

Additional credits:
Published as different interests [cover].
Apparently based on »different interests [pencil drawing]«.
Members of the Duck family are together, all busy with an interest of their
own. Daisy writing in her diary. Donald is reading an "investment news" paper.
Grandma is looking in an album. The nephews are solving a jigsaw puzzle.
Changes:
If Barks's recollection is incorrect, this cover could be a changed version
of »all reading«.
Backstage:
According to a January, 1979 letter to Michael Barrier, Barks believes that
this watercolor is based on
»different interests [pencil drawing]«, and that
»all reading« is an
alternate version of it. Barks wrote: "I often sent in two or more layouts
of such cover assignments."
Surviving material:

Lost material:

large christmas stocking [watercolor]
- Inducks: ...
- Barrier: MBAC-125
- CBL: 06C-632
- Type: watercolor
- Creation date: [1960]
- Art: Norm McGary
- Pencil: Carl Barks
- Script: [Carl Barks?]
- Hero: [[none]]
- Submission: 1960, April 25 (pencil drawing); [unknown] (watercolor)
- Publication date: 1960, (December)
- Issue: Merry Christmas No. 39
- Pages: 1
- Orientation: portrait
- Width: [unknown] inch
- Height: [unknown] inch
- Based on: large christmas stocking [pencil drawing] ?
Additional credits:
Published as large christmas stocking [cover].
Possibly based on
»large christmas stocking [pencil drawing]«, or at
least indirectly.
Changes:
One version of Barks's drawing still exists, and shows Donald with his eyes
partially closed, rather than completely open as they are in the painting.
This might mean that this surviving drawing is an alternate design. It might
also mean that the artist simply ignored the two lines which suggest the
partially closed eyes. Those two lines form the only, really significant
difference between the surviving drawing and the painting.
Another difference is the couch. In the painting, the couch is of a softer,
smoother type, in comparison to the couch in the surviving drawing. Also,
the couch of the drawing has slightly more room for the ducks.
Surviving material:
large christmas stocking [pencil drawing]

- Merry Christmas No. 39 (USA)

Changes:
According to The Carl Barks Library, Barks's design was changed by

story's text and tend to crowd to the art, Norman McGary removed them
while painting the cover [...] and transferred Donald to the righthand
side of the picture.")
