Duckburg

Debut by Barks: W WDC 49-02 tight-wire walkers

Backstage: Barks: "Duckburg was sort of figured to be near Burbank, California, the main plant of the Disney Studio, but obviously it had to be moved around to fit the requirements of whatever story I was writing. So it became a place of fantasy, like a fairy-tale locale. It had a desert, a lake, a sea, snow, tropical hurricanes, anything that was needed. I would have been very handicapped if I had been compelled to keep the location in Southern California."

Barks also explained the location and creation of Duckburg in the 1990s NRK (Norwegian broadcasting) 50 minute documentary of his life.

John D. Rockerduck

Debut by Barks: W WDC 255-01 Boat Buster
Last use by Barks: W WDC 255-01 Boat Buster

Backstage: Even though Barks never used this character again, it was adopted as a recurring character by Italian artists. The first non-Barks Rockerduck appeared in the Italian story "Zio Paperone e il kiwi volante", scripted by the Barosso brothers and drawn by Giorgio Bordini, published in "Almanacco Topolino" #75, March 1963.

Possibly, the Barosso brothers needed a rival millionaire for the "kiwi volante" story, and they used Rockerduck because he appeared in "Almanacco Topolino" #65, May 1962, while they were writing the story. Scrooge's other Barks competitor Flintheart Glomgold had made only two (Barks) appearances at the time. «in "The Second-richest Duck"» was published in Italy in "Topolino" #152 (December 1956), «and The Money Champ» in "Topolino" #234 (May 1960). Since the most recent story was published a few years before already, this may explain why the Barosso choose Rockerduck as competitor instead of Flintheart Glomgold.

Junior Woodchucks

Debut by Barks: W WDC 125-02 operation rescue saint bernard

Backstage: The scouting theme in «Good Scouts» undoubtedly contributed to Barks' inspiration for the Junior Woodchucks. But there is a crucial difference between the Woodchucks and the Good Scouts. Barks' later comic books trade on a role reversal in which the practical, ultra-competent children invariably find a way of saving their befuddled uncle, proving they are more adult than he. The Good Scouts, after an initial attempt to rescue Donald from the twin threats of a geyser and a bear, retire uncaring to bed.

Magica de Spell

Debut by Barks: W US 36-01 The Midas Touch
Last use by Barks: CB OIL 144 I Wonder What My Fortune Cookie Says

Italian sorceress.

Backstage: Barks based Magica on the svelte, sinister woman in Charles Addams's New Yorker cartoons. "Magica de Spell was, I hope, a more interesting witch than the ugly hags and fat bags who have been standard models for centuries," he has commented in notes written for The Carl Barks Library. "Her good looks gave her an extra element of power."

In about two and a half years, Magica appeared in seven Uncle Scrooge adventures and two ten-page Donald Duck stories. Then she dropped from sight. "I had developed her to the point where she needed very strong roles, and no story plot had popped into my tired head that could accomodate her," Barks explained.

neighbor Jones [classic appearance]

Debut by Barks: W WDC 38-02 in "Good Neighbors"
Last use by Barks: W WDC 289-00 arrow through pancake

Additional credits: Not to be confused with neighbor Jones [name].
The classic neighbor Jones is the one with the big chin, black hair, heavy eyebrows, etc.

Backstage: The classic neighbor Jones appeared in «borrowed putty», «lost ten-dollar bill», and «christmas caroling at peoples' doors». In the early 1960s, a fan letter reminded Barks of the classic Neigbor Jones. As a result, the character returned in «Fued and Far Between», and «Unfriendly Enemies».

neighbor Jones [name]

Debut by Barks: W WDC 34-01 good deeds and fire sticks
Last use by Barks: W US 6-03 old man fox's money ?

Additional credits: Apart from neighbor Jones [classic appearance], Barks has used at least two other neigbors named "Mr. Jones". These are counted here, as "name only" appearance.

Backstage: In fact, Barks was not the first artist who used Jones as name for a neigbor of Donald.
